MUSSET (Alfred de).
On ne badine pas avec l'amour, comedy in three acts, in prose. Paris, Charpentier, 1861. In-12, blue morocco, double gilt fillet, dotted fillet and rose garland in frame, spine decorated, inner lace, gilt edges, untrimmed, cover (Cuzin). First separate edition of this comedy originally published in 1834 in Un Spectacle dans un fauteuil. Signed letter from Paul de Musset on the title page: À Monsieur Provost, hommage de son bien profondément reconnaissant et bien sincère admirateur (To Mr. Provost, a tribute from his deeply grateful and sincere admirer). Jean-Baptiste Provost (1795-1865), creator of the role of the Baron, Perdican's father, in Musset's play, had a long career and excelled in cloak-and-dagger roles and financiers of high distinction. After a debut at the Odéon theatre, he played on the stage of the Porte-Saint-Martin before joining the Comédie-Française, where he became a member in 1839. Professor at the Conservatoire since 1836, he trained Pierre-François Beauvallet, Louis-Arsène Delaunay, Charles Thiron, Zélia Ponsin (who was his daughter-in-law) and Sarah Bernhardt. A unique copy, decorated with 22 original compositions by Paul Avril, of remarkable finesse: - a portrait in wash of Alfred de Musset, placed in the frontispiece - 11 original pen-and-ink drawings in the margins of the volume. - 10 original watercolours painted at the head, middle and end of each of the three acts. From the Robert Beauvillain library, with his bookplate engraved by Charles Jouas.
