GAILLARDET (Frédéric) et *** [Alexandre DUMAS].
The Tower of Nesle. Drama in five acts and nine tableaux. Paris, Barba, 1832. In-8, half khaki calf with corners, smooth spine decorated, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine (Meyer). First edition. Originally composed by the playwright Frédéric Gaillardet (1808-1882), this romantic drama was entirely rewritten by Alexandre Dumas père at the request of Harel, the director of the Porte-Saint-Martin theatre. The play was successfully staged at the Porte-Saint-Martin on May 29, 1832, with Mademoiselle George in the character of Marguerite de Bourgogne, the bloodthirsty queen who murdered her lovers. Enriched with an autograph note signed by Gaillardet (one page in-12) to his friend Agénor Altaroche (1811-1884), a journalist and man of letters who directed the Odéon theatre: since he had been ill for a long time, Gaillardet asked for two good seats in the balcony for the performance of Les Contes d'Hoffmann, which he had not been able to attend. Also added, a lithograph representing the Tour de Nesle and 2 engraved portraits, in period colours, showing Mademoiselle George and Bocage in their respective roles. From the libraries of A. Dutard (bookplate engraved by Simonet), Édouard Moura and Étienne Cluzel (1985, n°114). Light foxing.
