PIRON (Alexis).
Oeuvres complettes, published by M. Rigoley de Juvigny. Paris, De l'Imprimerie de M. Lambert, 1776. 7 volumes in-8, long-grained red morocco, wide lace decorated with straight and dotted fillets and scrolls, smooth spine decorated, inner scrolls, gilt edges (Period binding). The most complete collective edition of the works of Piron (1689-1773), given by Rigoley de Juvigny, legatee of the author's manuscripts, who added a Life of the author. The theatrical work of this Burgundian author is especially noteworthy for the comic operas he composed in his early years for the Théâtre de la Foire, alone or in collaboration with Lesage. La Métromanie, Piron's emblematic comedy, occupies pages 219 to 416 of volume II. The portrait of Piron, engraved in intaglio by Augustin de Saint-Aubin after a bust sculpted by Caffieri, is here replaced by another old portrait, before the letter. A remarkable copy, in a very nice morocco binding attributable to Bradel-Derome. It belonged to Paul Eugène Louis Marien (1886-1938), French singer and comedian better known as Pauley, star of vaudevilles in the 1920s-1930s. This is an attractive provenance for this artist who, like Piron in his time, made the whole of Paris laugh. It bears his bookplate and was included in the catalogue of his sale (1939, n°62). Without the volume of the Oeuvres badines which is often missing as it was published ten years later. Some foxing, especially in the Y section of volume IV.
