LESAGE (Alain-René).
Turcaret. Paris, Pierre Ribou, 1709. In-12, red morocco, triple fillet gilt, spine decorated, gilt lace inside, gilt edges (Hardy). First edition of Lesage's masterpiece of the theatre. A virulent satire of the world of finance in which the playwright tells the story of the fall of Turcaret, a grotesque financier who became rich through usury and swindling. The play was premiered on 14 February 1709 on the stage of the Comédie-Française but, under pressure from the financial lobby, it is said, was withdrawn after seven performances: after this event, Lesage broke away from classical theatre and turned to fairground theatre.
