Mithridates. Tragedy. Paris, Claude Barbin, 1673. In-12, dark blue morocco, coat of arms in the centre and gilt figure in the corners, spine decorated, same figure repeated, red morocco lining, gilt lace inside, coat of arms in the centre, double marbled paper endpapers, gilt edges (Trautz-Bauzonnet). First edition. The play was first performed at the beginning of 1673, by the troupe of the Hôtel de Bourgogne. It was at this time that Racine was elected to the Académie française. A fine copy in the characteristic binding designed for Albert de Naurois, a descendant of Jean Racine (see lot n°8). With wide margins (h. 156 mm), it comes from the Charles Hayoit library (I, 2001, n°126). Some light foxing. See reproduction page 12.
