Seated figure, Condorhuasi culture, Argentina... - Lot 97 - Giquello
Seated figure, Condorhuasi culture, Argentina 500 BC-500 AD Hollow ceramic with brick-red slip and ornamental cream and dark brown paints H. 22 cm Condorhuasi seated figure, ceramic on red slip with ornamental cream and dark brown paints, Argentina H. 8 5/8 in Provenance: - Former Antonio Seguí collection, Paris, end of 1970s - Private collection, Paris Seated woman in resting position with her hands on her knees. She is naked, her chest highlighted in slight relief, long legs bent, shins decorated with ornamental paintings. Head well clear of the shoulders, eyes and mouth highlighted by deep horizontal incisions, beautiful zigzag make-up on the cheeks and nose. The skull is topped by a small tubular neck with a flared edge. The statuette is slightly humped, the spine and the back are made up with creamy white paint. This type of anthropomorphic vase is extremely rare, this one is particularly elegant and reminds without any doubt the beautiful Chupicuaro statuary of Mexico. Cf Trésors du Nouveau monde, Brussels, 1992, p.445, n°482, a very similar elongated statuette coming from the Archaeological Museum of San Miguel de Tucumán in Argentina
