Statue, Dogon, Mali Wood with thick black... - Lot 85 - Giquello
Statue, Dogon, Mali Wood with thick black ritual patina, partly oozing H. 40 cm Dogon figure, Mali H. 15 ¾ in Provenance: - Former collection from the south of France - Galerie Nicolas Rolland, Paris - French private collection The figure is depicted standing, legs slightly bent, arms at the side of the body, hands clasped on the belly, small breasts subtly rounded, head resting on a tubular neck, the Adam's apple marked. The head, with its generous volume, is represented by a half-sphere separated by a median ridge. The round ears can still be seen under the thick material. The whole body is caught in a slight twist that gives remarkable life to the sculpture. The whole is covered with a thick black and greasy sacrificial material, oozing in places. The style of this superb statue probably locates its origin between the Sanga region in the south of the plateau, where the Bombou Toro style flourishes - characterized by geometric bodies and spherical heads - and the Bankass circle in the Seno plain where the Tomo-Ka style develops, with more abstract features.
