Mask, Dan, Ivory Coast Wood, cotton fibers H.... - Lot 82 - Giquello
Mask, Dan, Ivory Coast Wood, cotton fibers H. 30 cm Dan mask, Ivory Coast H. 11 6/8 in Provenance : - Collected in Ivory Coast by M. Simon Escarré before 1950 - French private collection, acquired from the Escarré family This beautiful mask with a superb patina of use shows a face with classical and powerful features: the nose with hemmed nostrils, the wide mouth with half-open lips, the cheeks decorated with long bands of scarification marks, and the chin supporting a beard made of cotton fibers. Although classical in its composition, the mask is radically different from the known corpus because of its large square eyes, a very rare characteristic (for another mask with square eyes, see Museum für Völkerkunde Basel, III/7515). Fischer and Himmelheber have studied the different typologies of Dan masks without distinguishing a category of masks with square eyes. However, these authors have also insisted on the fact that certain masks could evolve and have various functions during their long ritual life. It is not excluded that our example has had several lives, its eyes having been modified for specific cultural needs.
