Comb, Vanuatu Wood, wicker fibre H. 23 cm Vanuatu... - Lot 72 - Giquello
Comb, Vanuatu Wood, wicker fibre H. 23 cm Vanuatu comb H. 9 in Provenance: - Collection of Doctor Philippe François (1859-1908), acquired in situ between 1888 and 1895 - Tajan, Collections océaniennes du Docteur Philippe François, 13 December 2002, lot 5 - Galerie Yann Ferrandin, Paris - Private collection, Paris Exhibition / Publication: - Hair, Galerie Yann Ferrandin, Paris, 6 September - 1 October 2016 Made of thin strips of wood linked by a complex weave this elegant comb combines the simplicity of the forms with the fragility of the materials. It is also distinguished by its great rarity and historical provenance. In 1888, Dr. Philippe François embarked for Oceania, where he was charged with studying the biology of coral reefs. After a return to France in 1891, he left again in 1893 for the Pacific Ocean. His journey took him to New Caledonia, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. He brought back from his travels many botanical, mineralogical, zoological (mainly insects), anthropological and ethnographic specimens, most of which he donated to museums. However, he kept some of the ethnographic material that he studied and displayed on his property. These pieces, including the comb studied here, were dispersed at Drouot in 2002. For two comparable combs, see Speiser (Ethnographische materialien aus den Neuen Hebriden und den Banks-Inseln, 1923, pl.34, n°55) and Ader-Picard-Tajan (Arts primitifs, Collection de Geneviève Rodier, 31 May 1972, lot 54 - described as African).
