Dogon maternity, Mali Wood and very old patina,... - Lot 36 - Giquello
Dogon maternity, Mali Wood and very old patina, metal collars H. 31 cm Dogon maternity, Mali H. 12 2/8 in 8 000/ 12 000 Provenance: - Han Coray, Lugano before 1927, inventory number H.C - Paolo Morigi, Magliaso - Renaud Vanuxem, Paris - French private collection Publication: - Paolo Morigi, Arte Africana: Le Sculture, Galleria Arte Primitiva, Lugano, 1975, n°5 - Bertrand Goy et Renaud Vanuxem, Arts anciens du Mali, 2007, p. 230-231 This maternity brought back very early before the end of the 1920s as attested by the inventory number H.C.5 of Han Coray (1880-1974) who was one of the great collectors of the time and one of the founders of the Dada movement in Zurich, where he held the first exhibition in his gallery in 1917. The rigor of the style with its verticals and obliques characteristic of the southern cliffs of Bandiagara complements the dignity of the pose. The kneeling position is a mark of respect during ceremonies. It is possible that it is an object of family devotion.
