Ɵ Dogon feminine standing statue, Mali Presumed period: 1700 Wood H. 66 cm Dogon feminine standing figure, Mali H. 26 in Provenance: - Tristan Tzara, Paris, 1950s - Christophe Tzara, Paris, 1969 - Sotheby's London, 8 July 1969, lot 164 - Merton Simpson, New York - Philippe Guimiot, Brussels - Baudouin de Grunne, Brussels - Bernard de Grunne, Brussels - Private collection Publications: - Philippe Guimiot, Regards sur une Collection, Brussels, 1995, plate 3. - Philippe Guimiot, Arts Premiers d'Afrique Noire, Brussels, Crédit Communal, 1977, p. 27. - Arts Premiers d'Afrique Noire, Passage 44, Crédit Communal de Belgique, Brussels, 1977. This female cult statue, of great antiquity, very long, has a very beautiful profile in spite of visible erosion. Philippe Guimiot, who owned it after Tristan Tzara, said of this sculpture that it was "very constructed and elaborate, marked by a characteristic and constant analysis of the subject treated in vertical, diagonal and horizontal lines that evoke cubism". The high skull is covered with fine plaited braids that fall back into a long and elegant "neck cover". The face is delicate with a long nose with well marked wings dominating a small tight mouth. The long neck wears a wide collar falling on the erect chest. The abdomen has various square-shaped scarifications as well as the sides of the abdomen. The navel is prominent as it often is. The arms are eroded, the left one missing. The very long legs are eroded, the left leg partly missing. The whole is covered with a patina of great and long use. Ɵ This lot is in temporary import
