Kachina Clown Mudhead, Koyemsi Katsina Hopi,... - Lot 15 - Giquello
Kachina Clown Mudhead, Koyemsi Katsina Hopi, Arizona, United States Second half of the 20th century Carved wood (cottonwood root), pigments and feathers H. 26.5 cm Mudhead Clown Kachina doll, Koyemsi Katsina H. 10 ½ in This doll embodies a Kachina of the Clown family named Koyemsi ("mudhead"). This boisterous and facetious character plays an important role in Hopi ritual dances. His outrageous and comical behaviour provokes the intervention of the Kachina Guardians and Warriors. The latter, who are responsible for maintaining order, have the mission of restoring calm during the ceremonies. But sometimes the Hopi Clowns have the last word! This kachina in action is full of energy and humor, just like the character she embodies.
