H. 1 2/8 in - L. 4 in
Provenance :
- Former private collection, France
In Inuktitut (the Inuit language), ulu means "woman's knife". It has been used for centuries, in a form that has undergone little evolution throughout the Far North, from Greenland to Siberia. These knives were used to cut up carcasses and prepare skins (usually seal skins) for clothing or to cover the wooden frames of kayaks or drums.
The example presented here is distinguished by the great poetry of its representation in the form of a lying walrus.
