Musician angel in limestone carved with traces... - Lot 140 - Giquello
Musician angel in limestone carved with traces of polychromy. The angel is dressed in a long tunic tied at the waist by a wide belt, an apron and an open cloak with edges highlighted by a chevron and pearl pattern braid; tight and parallel folds. The head has a sharp chin and curly hair framing the face. Fastening on the back. Spain ?Pyrenees, mid 12th century Height: 88 cm (Erosion, head, hands and trunk redone) Provenance: Former collection of Paul Huillard (1875-1966), architect-decorator, then that, by inheritance, of his nephew by marriage Jean-Louis Moreau Sale Auxerre, Me Sineau, 7 April 1991, lot 79 Galerie Gilles Cohen, Paris An analysis of the stone carried out by the geologist Annie Blanc confirms that the head, the trunk and the arms are not sculpted in the same stone as the body, which she considers to be a rock [which] comes from a detrital formation called "molasse", which forms at the foot of eroding mountains, such as at the foot of the Alps and the Pyrenees. This molasse does not resemble the molasses of Savoy and Isère, nor those of the Pyrenees-Atlantiques. One possibility would be on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees.
