Atelier d'Eugène LE POITTEVIN (1806-1870)
Darsie rescued and abducted by Redgauntlet Oil on canvas Monogrammed on the horse 88 x 137 cm (Re-oil, some repainting) This work is to be compared with the painting by Eugène Le Poittevin, now kept at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Brest, which was presented at the 1839 Salon. It is inspired by an episode from Redgaunlet, a story by Walter Scott published in 1824 and illustrated by Eugène Delacroix in a lithograph in 1829. This romantic epic features Redgaunlet, a legendary hero, half lord, half brigand, who saves a young prince from the rising waters thanks to a leaping steed, symbolizing the victory of the forces of good over the raging elements
