Yerassimos SKLAVOS (1927-1967)
Cyclades Bas-relief in gilded bronze Signed "SKLAVOS" lower left H. 34,7 cm - L. 34 cm Related work: Yerassimos Sklavos, Cyclades, 1963, stone relief, H. 35 x L. 34 x W. 8 cm, Paris, Collection N. Sklavos Related literature: Dora Iliopoulou-Rogan, Sklavos, Shaping the Spirit, 1927-1967, Athens, National Bank of Greece, 1998, p. 146, stone model referenced as no. 50. Sklavos' work is mainly based on direct carving, a technique by which he attacks stone or marble, and whose struggle was to prove fatal to him in 1967 when he was crushed to death under a colossal block he was sculpting for a May Salon. The original model of our work was carved in stone using this technique and the bronze work we are presenting is taken directly from it. The title is a tribute to the artist's Hellenistic origins and the influence of Greek art in his vision of abstraction and sculpture.
