NADAL (Jérôme).
Adnotationes et meditationes in Evangelia [...]. Antwerp, Ex Officina Platiniana [at the end: John Moretus], 1607. In-folio, red morocco, double framed with three gilt fillets, fleuron at the corners, spandrels drawn with small irons, large central cartouche of diamond shape drawn with small irons, the middle left in reserve, spine decorated, inner wheel, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Very beautiful Flemish illustrated book from the Plantinian presses, decorated with an architectural title-frontispiece engraved in intaglio. The copy includes the series of prints intended to illustrate the work of Jerome Nadal (1507-1580), Jesuit father born in Majorca and first rector of Messina: this superb suite engraved in intaglio after Martin de Vos by the Wierix brothers, assisted by Johann and Adriaen Collaert and Charles de Mallery, comprises 144 (out of 154) plates including a title decorated with the portrait of Christ, entitled Evangelicae historiae imagines and bearing the address of Antwerp and the date of 1593. Nice leather binding decorated with small irons, strictly period. Tear without missing at the bottom of the FF2 sheet. Small brown wetness on a few boards, some of them entirely burnished. Rubbings on the binding, missing caps, a split bit on the height of a box, large spot of wetness on the second cover.
