The Uses and Customs of the Sea. Bordeaux, Jacques Mongiron Millanges, 1661. - Explanation of naval terms used by the Edicts, Ordinances and Regulations of the Admiralty. Bordeaux, Jacques Mongiron Millanges, 1660. 2 parts in one volume in-4, ivory vellum, stiff, overlapping, red speckled edges (Binding at the time). The reference book for the knowledge of maritime law before the 18th century. Second edition, partly original. It was Étienne Cleirac (1583-1657), a jurisconsult from Bordeaux, who first had the idea of collecting all the official texts and documents concerning maritime law, which is why this treatise first appeared in 1647 in Bordeaux. The work is divided into three main parts, the outline of which is announced under the title: De la Navigation, Du Commerce Naval & Contrats Maritimes, and De la Jurisdiction de la Marine. The part devoted to whale fishing on the coast of Guyenne (pp. 141-155) provides information of the greatest interest for the history of the discovery of America; indeed, it is stated that the Basques discovered America (Newfoundland and the Canadian coasts) one hundred years before Christopher Columbus, and that the Pilot who brought the first news to Christopher Columbus, & luy gave the knowledge & address of this new world, was one of our Newfoundland Basques. The Explanation of Navy Terms has a special title page with the mention of second edition and dated 1660 (part between pp. 598-599). Handwritten inscription dated 1739 on the title. Without the off-text plate for the Tide Table, attached to only a few copies. Wavy dishes
