DU PERAC, Stefanus [DU PÉRAC, Etienne] /De Rubeis, Io. Iacob. [Giovanni Giacomo de Rossi].
Urbis Romae Sciographia ex antiquis monumentis accuratiss [ime] delineata . Rome, 1574/ca. 1649. Black and white. Plan etched on strong paper in 8 unassembled plates + text engraved separately. Four plates: 52 x 37 cm and four plates: 52 x 42 cm. The plates have very large margins (7 cm). When put together, the plan measures about 1060 x 1570 cm (without the text). The plates and text are connected on the left side by a pink silk cord. A few stains of humidity affect the upper margins of the plates without affecting the engraving. An ancient pen inscription at the bottom of the caption: "Purchased in Rome in 1770". 520 x 420 mm. Third state of this rare and spectacular plan of ancient Rome by Etienne Du Perac, edited by G. G. De Rossi. The plan is not assembled but the boards are bound together with a pink silk ribbon. This copy also includes the notice to the reader by J. J. de Rubeis and the legend with references to the monuments and places represented. This text, in several sheets, is bound with all the plates. At the top left, an oval shield with the arms of the city supported by two loves and crossed by the inscription: "? S ? P ? Q ? R ? ". The dedication is below and to the right, on a wolf skin in a monumental cartouche decorated with Romulus and Remus children. "Engraved on eight plates, this plan is a summation of archaeological science in the sixteenth century; Dupérac restores there the plan of ancient Rome with all its monuments". - S. Bifolco and F. Ronca, Cartografia e topografia italiana del XVI secolo, vol. 3, pp. 2358-9, no. 3.
