Stopper, Makonde, Mozambique Wood, brass,... - Lot 78 - Giquello
Stopper, Makonde, Mozambique Wood, brass, beads, shells, fibres Late 19th - early 20th century H. 15 cm Makonde stopper, Mozambique H. 6 in Provenance: - Antonio Silva - Rui Vasquez, Cascais, Portugal - Private collection This litete stopper was collected in the Mueda region in northern Mozambique, on the border with Tanzania. As was often the case, it was mounted on a brass cartridge dated 1934 and manufactured - brand AE - in Moscavide, Portugal. This beautifully sized stopper represents a female bust entirely scarified, with fairly classical motifs in high relief on the realistic face, breasts and belly as well as on the back. The hairstyle in slight diamond relief is blackened. The back of the ears is decorated with shells and red pearls. The usual patina is light brown. Two related objects are published in Karl Weule's book on German East Africa in 1908.
