Mortar with Mbala caryatid, Democratic Republic of Congo Late 19th - early 20th century Wood with brown patina H.40 cm Caryatid Mbala Mortar, Democratic Republic of the Congo H. 153/4 in Provenance: - Collection Montfort - Ancienne collection Guillemain (Belgique) - Private collection Bibliography: - Custom Policy - Exhibited in Boston Collector Show Harvard in Primitive Art Newsletter, vol. 5, n°12, December 1982, p.3 Exhibition: - 1st Salon d'Art Tribal, Paris, Hôtel Dassault, 19-22 September 1998, illustrated in the catalogue The Mbala population migrated from Angola and settled south of the confluence of the Kwago and Kwilu rivers. In spite of this migration, they have retained a unity of Mbala style. The Mbala, whose diet is matrilineal, give great importance to maternity wards, a key element in the cult of the ancestors. This large mortar, supported by a seated female caryatid, is very well balanced and beautifully made. Some characteristics of the style with the braided hairstyle and the diamond-shaped face can be found in the figure. Beautiful patina of light brown use.
