Ɵ Knife, Mangbetu People, Northwest of the... - Lot 72 - Giquello
Ɵ Knife, Mangbetu People, Northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Wood and iron H. 23.2 cm Mangbetu Knife, Northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo H. 9 1/8 in Provenance: - Ginzberg Collection, New York - Lance Entwistle, London - Private collection The Mangbetu people excelled in the production of sumptuous knives with particularly elegant blades and wooden and ivory handles, sometimes carved with anthropomorphic representation. The knife in the Ginzberg collection is a perfect example of this. It is adorned with a magnificent female head, in the purest ethnic style and decorated with elegant scarifications, which dominates the foliate blade. A courtly object of unprecedented luxury, the volumes of its head and its important headdress, aligned in the plane of the guard, nevertheless favour a functional pre-emption. Although very few knives of this type have reached us, none have similar plastic qualities. It should be noted that a stylistically close copy belongs to the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art (inv. 1969.S.155).
