Dr. Michel Gaud, Saint Tropez, France - Sotheby's... - Lot 55 - Giquello
Dr. Michel Gaud, Saint Tropez, France - Sotheby's London, 29 November 1993, lot 70 - Lance Entwistle, London - Private collection Publication: - Francois Neyt, The Arts of the Benue: To the Roots of Tradition, Ottignies, Hawaiian Agronomics, 1985, p. 135. It is undoubtedly, above all else, the tradition of masks which, in Idoma country, touches the realm of the sacred. This beautifully expressive Okua mask has a rare hairstyle consisting of five bows, openwork almond-shaped eyes with deep eye sockets and scarification between the eyebrows. In front of the ears in high relief, a prominent vertical scarification is connected to the ears by two curves. The nose is dazzling, the mouth is wide and ajar, the chin covered with a beautiful scarification. Beautiful reddish-brown patina with many traces of red and white pigments.
