Gbene figurative cup, Koro, Nigeria Wood,... - Lot 51 - Giquello
Gbene figurative cup, Koro, Nigeria Wood, feather, fibre, cauri H. 52 cm Gbene figurative cup, Koro, Nigeria H. 201/2 in According to District Officer Robin Jagoe who was able to observe and photograph the ceremonies in 1957, these gbene cups were used for rituals involving the sharing of palm wine. These rites could extend over a year with sacrifices until the second funeral was reached. According to other authors the cup could be used at the same time by two people to drink beer as well as palm wine during funeral celebrations or masquerades. This cup has the peculiarity that it is an integral part of the figure, of which it occupies a large part of the abdomen. The style is quite classical: a small round head topped by a crest on a long neck resting on square shoulders and a flat body. The limbs are rather geometric like the scarification that covers the whole object. On the left arm there is a small "charm" composed of feathers, fibres and a cauri.
