Katsina Angwusnasomtaka Hopi, Arizona Crow... - Lot 12 - Giquello
Katsina Angwusnasomtaka Hopi, Arizona Crow Mother Kachina Years 1900-1910 H. 23.5 cm Angwusnasomtaka Katsina - Crow Mother Kachina doll H. 91/4 in Provenance: - Bears a handwritten label: "Ex collection Woodard, Museum collection, Gallup, New Mexico" - Ex collection Marion ML Woodard, Gallup - Collection de Monsieur A. F., Paris This Kachina doll is called Angwusnasomtaka in the Hopi pantheon. Her name means "Crow Mother" or "Character with Raven Wings". The modernity of the geometrical patterns that animate her face is noteworthy. The ears are represented by stepped elements mirroring the triangle of the face. Series of black triangles also appear on the sides of the shawl worn by this female figure. Intervening on each of the three Mesas, this Chief Kachina often leads the processions, particularly during the rituals of Powamu (the Dance of the Bean). He walks with a calm and imposing step as he passes in front of the various kivas and welcomes other Kachina dancers in the procession. He opens the ceremonies by carrying sacred food (corn or beans) in his basket. The figure of the Raven Mother has inspired many Western artists, foremost among them Sophie Taeuber-Arp who from 1921-1922 incorporated Kachina masks and costumes into her Dadaist works. Sophie Taeuber-Arp and her sister Erika Schlegel in Kachina Hopi costumes, 1921-1922
