Katsina Angak'china Long-haired Kachina Hopi,... - Lot 4 - Giquello
Katsina Angak'china Long-haired Kachina Hopi, Arizona Years 1900-1920 H. 25 cm Angak'china Katsina - Long hair Kachina doll H. 9 7/8 in Provenance: - Inventory number on the back: 18/881 - Collection of Mr A. F., Paris Identifiable by her long hair falling down to the middle of her back and her black beard surmounted by a series of multicoloured squares depicting a rainbow, this ritual doll is a representation of the spirit Angak'China, the Long Haired Kachina. The Hopi made her dance in the hope of seeing heavy rain. During the ritual processions, the dancers embodying the Angak'China Spirit sang harmoniously to invoke the end of the dry period. The Kachina presented here is distinguished by the rigour of its construction and the purity of its costume. It exudes a feeling of power and hieraticism tinged with poetry.
