BOSSUET, Jacques Benigne
CORRECTIVE: The copy conforms to the description given by Tchemerzine (I, p. 892, b) and, as required by Tchemerzine, there are 9 introductory leaves and not 10 as mistakenly indicated in the catalogue Seconde instruction sur les passages particuliers de la Version du Nouveau Testament printed at Trévoux in the year 1702. With a Preliminary Dissertation on the Doctrine & and Criticism of Grotius Paris, Anisson, 1703 Bossuet critique de Grotius. A sparkling copy in morocco with the arms of the Chancellor of Pontchartrain. From the former Robert Hoe Collection Original Edition. The Dissertation on Grotius occupies half of the volume, from pages 1 to 130 In-12 (160 x 90mm). Snack: (10 ff. including the first blank), cxxx, 203 pp. Binding of the period. Red morocco, gilt decoration, coat of arms in the centre of the covers, spine ribbed, very ornate and gilt with filigree decoration, gilt edges. Provenance: Louis Phélypeaux, Comte de Pontchartrain, Chancellor of France (1643-1727) -- Robert Hoe (ex-libris) -- acquired from Lucien Gougy on February 15, 1919 The first Instructions on the New Testament version, criticizing the doctrine of Richard Simon, had appeared separately in 1702. But it is the meeting of Bossuet and Grotius that represents the main interest of this work.
