Il Decamerone London, 1757 Gravelot's masterpiece: "One of the most successful illustrated books of the whole of the eighteenth century." A copy with all margins, on fine paper, in good condition, in a sober first state binding with the initials on the spine of the plates, printed on Dutch paper. 5 volumes in-8 (219 x 135mm). Headbands and 97 culs-de-lampe engraved on copper. Illustration: 5 frontispieces, 1 portrait, 110 plates drawn by Gravelot, Boucher, Cochin and Eisen, and engraved by Aliamet, Bacquoy, Flipart, Saint-Aubin etc., two plates before the letter, one plate printed on thinner paper. Bindings circa 1800. Long spines of long-grained red morocco, red morocco paper plates, very many surviving witnesses A volume discharge at the old bookmark location, pl. 6 of t. V slightly stitched Cohen-de Ricci points out that the print run of the proofs is better in the Italian edition of the text because it is earlier than the French translation published the same year.
