HUGO (Victor).
THE SONGS OF DUSK. Paris, Renduel, 1835. In-8, glazed blue calf, double gilt fillets and cold drawn palm leaf roulette, large diamond shaped plate with scroll motifs cold drawn in the centre, decorated spine, inner roulette, gilt edges (contemporary binding). FIRST EDITION. VERY FINE COPY, IN A BRILLIANT BINDING OF A SUBTLE AND RARE HUE, PERFECTLY PRESERVED. The binding is not signed, but it can be attributed to Joseph Thouvenin. The same spine irons are indeed found on a binding signed by the master bookbinder for a copy of La Henriade, reproduced in the Guerquin catalogue, pl. IX. The copy was part of Henri Beraldi's library (not in the catalogue), then belonged to his son-in-law Pierre Querquin (1959, no. 122). Added portrait of Victor Hugo engraved by Pollet. Some slight freckles. Very discreet restoration at the hinge of the second plate.
