CROS (Charles).
GENERAL SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHY. Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1869. Platelet in-8, bradel beige canvas, smooth back with a red title piece along the length (G. Gauché). FIRST EDITION, VERY RARE. First book of the author and PIONEER TEXT ON THE INVENTION OF COLOR PHOTOGRAPHY. The booklet includes the main part of a communication made to the Academy of Sciences two years before (1867) and an article published in Les Mondes. However, Cros adds an essential novelty: chromatic synthesis. From that moment on, colour photography is, at least theoretically, found. The misfortune wanted Ducos du Hauron, at exactly the same time and independently, to end up with the same results, leading to a brief polemic and frustrating Cros of part of his glory. The latter nevertheless continued, until the last months of his life, research that obeyed the same passion as the Impressionists' for colour. It is moreover from Le Printemps de Manet (1882) that Cros made his first colour proofs (In French in the text, n° 292). As very often, the selling price of 1 franc indicated on the cover is scratched off, the edition having remained on sale at Gauthier-Villars for nearly a hundred years.
