TRICERATOPS NOSE HORN Triceratops horridus Late... - Lot 132 - Giquello
TRICERATOPS NOSE HORN Triceratops horridus Late Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation Christopher ranch, Powder River County, Powdersville, Montana The Triceratops is undoubtedly one of the world's best-known and most popular dinosaurs, due in part to its distinctive three-horned skull and flared bony frill. Although fearsome in appearance, these horns were long-considered to serve a primarily defensive function. Recent scholarship, however, has suggested a function much like the antlers of the reindeer or the rhinoceros beetle, for rituals of display and courtship. The least obvious and most rare of the three horns on Triceratops is the nose horn given that the two brow horns are typically a matched pair. The present nose horn is in excellent condition and retains its rugose texture. It measures 9 ½ x 6 inches (24 x 15 cm) and comes complete with a custom display stand.
