FOSSIL STINGRAY AND FISH PLAQUE Heliobatus... - Lot 36 - Giquello
FOSSIL STINGRAY AND FISH PLAQUE Heliobatus radians Eocene Green River Formation, Wyoming, USA Fossil stingrays are quite rare due to the fact that they are a cartilaginous fish, a characteristic highly antipathetic to fossilization. On the rare occasions when they are found and removed successfully, they are usually partials and not complete. The present specimen is a rare exception; so fine is the preservation that most of the delicate and fragile "wing" bones are still intact. As an added bonus, swimming alongside the stingray are two of the abundant Knightia sp., an ancestor of the modern herring. All are presented on a natural limestone matrix plate measuring 20.4 x 26.2 inches (52,5 x 66,5 cm) overall. Green River Formation, WY, USA H. 20.4 in - W. 26.2 in
