HUMAN HEAD Culture Veracruz, Gulf Coast, Mexico Classical, 250-650 A.D. H. 19.5 cm Grey basalt with rough surface `This head may originally have been a palma, a votive element forming part of the ball game. The lower part of the scultpure is polished and follows the traditional shape of this votive piece. It may also have been resculpted at the base, once part of a complete statue. Beautiful face with bulging eyes framed by strongly marked eyebrow arches, extending into a small short nose with dilated nostrils. Pointed chin surmounted by an oval mouth with thick lips. On the sides, small ribbons forming the ears. Top of the skull naked, stripped of all ornamentation. Provenance: Alfred Stendhal Gallery, Los Angeles, 1960s Franco Monti Collection, 1960s-1970s
