ELU OGONI MASK, NIGERIA Semi-hard wood with... - Lot 169 - Giquello
ELU OGONI MASK, NIGERIA Semi-hard wood with brown patina, pigments H. 18 cm This small Ogoni mask with movable jaw has a beautiful shiny patina, bituminous in places. The blackened hairstyle forms a very graphic curl, and extends to the temples in two sharp points. The eyes are split on both sides of a short nose, whose roundness takes up the volume of the lips. The seductive features, as well as the reduced dimensions, contribute to reinforce the preciousness of the object. Very beautiful internal size by regular sections, patinated by an old use. Inserted on a cloth or vegetal fibre cap that covers the wearer's head entirely because of its modest size, this type of mask is part of a classic type. The masks are used for a wide variety of purposes: in some regions they are used only for entertainment, in others they are used for funeral ceremonies or the annual yam festival, while in others they are used to enforce court decisions (In. The Other Face, African Masks from the Barbier-Mueller Collection, page 136). (Small accidents) Provenance: Private collection, Paris.
