STATUE AFO, NIGERIA Hardwood with brown-black... - Lot 157 - Giquello
STATUE AFO, NIGERIA Hardwood with brown-black patina, traces of lye blue, H. 54 cm Rare female Afo effigy, the powerful body solidly inscribed on a short circular base. The bust is marked by a very rounded umbilicus, the breasts hanging high, at shoulder height. The face, crossed like the abdomen by numerous scars, is detailed with sobriety. The headdress is a simple mat at the back of the skull. Linked to the cult of fertility, this statue received offerings from women during the annual Aya ceremony. Very few examples of this type are known to this day.
