STATUE IKENGA IBO, NIGERIA Wood with a crusty brown patina H. 54 cm Character standing, legs bent at an angle protruding, hands bringing a ritual instrument against the abdomen. The face with a severe expression is dominated by horns stretching the composition vertically, and is characteristic of this type of object. The ensemble, of a certain presence, is marked by a ritual patina. Essentially present among the Ibo, Ikenga statues are also attested to by their neighbours Edo, Ishan, Urhobo and Ijaw. Used in exclusively male cults, they are intended to bring social, material and political success. Provenance: Private collection, Paris
