SALAMPASU MASK DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO Wood,... - Lot 49 - Giquello
SALAMPASU MASK DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO Wood, fiber, kaolin H. 30 cm - L. 20 cm Living in the Democratic Republic of Congo, on the border with Angola, the Salampasu are known to be great warriors. Their masks, intended to frighten, attest to this reputation. The rounded forehead dominates two large orbital cavities. The flat nose where the nostrils are signified participates in the graphic dynamism. The pointed teeth are covered with kaolin like the small ears. A long braided beard hangs from the chin. A crusty patina covers the whole outer part. Three lines drawn on the face with red pigment give rhythm to the whole. Provenance: Collection Eugène Dodeigne, France
