Ecole Anglaise du xviie siècle
Presumed Portrait of Charles I, King of England (1600-1649) Oil on copper oval 7.5 x 5.8 cm This portrait is probably that of King Charles I of England who reigned between 1625 and 1649, when he was beheaded by Cromwell. The artist is said to have copied an engraving and, in an attempt to make the work more faithful, used the codes of the English miniature, found in John Hoskins (1589/60-1664) and Samuel Cooper (1609-1672) among others, with the blue sky and the red curtain. However, the colour of the hair, tending towards light chestnut, and the descending moustache are not exactly faithful to the portrait of the king. It is therefore possible that the artist who painted this miniature did not have a faithful representation of the king before his eyes. However, the pictorial and stylistic qualities of the work do not make it possible to attribute it to the Continental school. Prepared by Madame Céline Cachaud, specialist in 15th and 17th century miniatures.
