MANUSCRIBE. - Catalogue of the books of the... - Lot 342 - Giquello
MANUSCRIBE. - Catalogue of the books of the Fourqueux Library. S.l., 1831. Manuscript in-folio (422 x 268?mm), 2 leaves for the title and notice, 72 pages (the last 8 blank), one table leaf, green half calf, trays covered with Empire green maroquined paper, cold rolled and triple gilt fillet, gilt title on three lines on the first tray, smooth decorated spine (Binding of the period). Very interesting manuscript catalogue of a castle library of more than 1000 books. An introductory notice states that the volumes are kept in 20 cabinets and tells us how the catalogue was compiled. The title is beautifully calligraphed. Various disciplines are represented: history, novels, French and foreign literature, theatre, religion, jurisprudence, science, arts and crafts, military art and education. The history and travel sections are well stocked: the latter includes the great classics of the genre: the voyages to America by Frézier, Labat, Ulloa, La Condamine, the history of the freebooters of Oexmelin, the relationship of Siam by the abbot of Choisy, Anson's trip around the world and that of Dampier, Saussure's trip to the Alps, etc. Binding rubs.
