HEALTH THRESOR (The), or Mesnage of Human... - Lot 299 - Giquello
HEALTH THRESOR (The), or Mesnage of Human Life. Divided into ten Books. Which deal extensively with all kinds of Meat & Beverages, all their quality & preparation. Lyon, Jean Antoine Huguetan, 1607 [at the end: Lyon, De l'Imprimerie d'Estienne Servain, 1607]. In-8, olive calf, triple gilt fillet, decorated spine, fawn title piece, double inner fillet, gilt edges (Binding ca. 1850). Vicar, col. 834-835. The only edition of this important treatise on dietetics and cooking in French, written by a doctor whose identity has remained anonymous. The book is interesting in that it provides, alongside the dietary knowledge that the author drew mainly from Hippocrates, Celsus, Dioscorides, Galen and Avicenna, extensive developments on ways of accommodating food. ...] He therefore forms, beyond his first medical commentary, a veritable encyclopaedia of eating habits at the beginning of the seventeenth century: by the importance given to the mention of local specialities, a geography of food production is outlined and, through the details of the recipes, the permanence of ancient tastes is observed, characterised by the recurrence of sweet and sour flavours and the abundant use of spices (Livres en bouche, No. 82). Exotic specialities such as fish bread from the Kingdom of Aden, root bread from the New World, palm wine from Africa or the East Indies, etc. are mentioned. Book X, which contains about sixty pages, is entirely devoted to jams, jellies, candied fruits and fruit jellies. Armoured ex-libris by Louis-Gabriel-César, Viscount de Kergorlay, a childhood friend of Tocqueville. Some reinforced or restored leaves in the inner margin (notably leaves *7, E1, P2 and CC1). Small rubbing at the binding, wear at three corners.
