Saint-Domingue.
- Statutes and regulations made by the Royal Company of Santo Domingo, [...] for the Regie, Police, & Conduct of its Dwellings & Commerce throughout the Colony. S.l.n.d. [1716]. Platelet in-4 (245 x 182 mm) of 8 pages (the last one unencumbered), bradel cardboard, brown marbled paper, title label on spine (modern binding). Important piece in the history of Santo Domingo. The creation of the Royal Company of Santo Domingo in 1698 marked the beginning of the economic exploitation of the western part of the island, recognized as a French colony by the Treaty of Ryswick (1697). The statutes and regulations deal with questions of ownership of the lands granted by the said Company, the taxation of the inhabitants, the use of precious woods and the maintenance and increase of crops (tobacco in particular). Article X concerns the "security" of the inhabitants vis-à-vis the slaves.
