RELIURE.
- DALIBRAY (Charles). Philosophical and moral verses. S.l., 1641 [sic, actually 1653]. Petit in-8, pp. 3-96, brown calf, compartmentalized boards, spine decorated with fleurons, marbled edges (Binding from the 18th century). Very rare and curious specimen of an 18th century binding decorated by corrosion. Léon Gruel, p. 158 of volume II of his Manuel historique et bibliographique de l'amateur de reliures, reproduces a binding with similar decoration on a 1742 edition. He calls this type of binding a marbled calf binding with reserves, and describes the process used by the bookbinder to obtain this interlacing decoration imitated by Grolier, without any [sic] net to crimp the contours. These verses by Charles Vion Dalibray (1590-1632), a libertine poet who was the friend and pupil of Saint-Amant, are a fragment of the collective edition of 1653. An architectural title-frontispiece bearing David Ferrand's address and the date 1641 has been added, and the above-mentioned title has been written in pen on a butterfly. Spine decoration practically erased. Blunt corners.
