[PANCKOUCKE (Charles-Joseph)].
Del Piacere e del dolore. Florence, Nella Stamperia Luchi, 1798. In-12, long grain green morocco, gilt Greek in frame, fleuron at the corners, smooth spine decorated, red title coin, inside Greek (Italian binding of the time). Very rare treatise on metaphysics: no copy is listed in the large computerized catalogues. Italian translation of the Discourse on Pleasure and Pain, text by the printer-librarian Charles-Joseph Panckoucke (1736-1798) published in 1790 and republished as an article in L'Encyclopédie méthodique (1791, vol. IV, pp. 32-50). The author analyses pleasure and pain from a scientific, philosophical and moral point of view, both in animals (he takes the example of the beaver and the elephant, among others), in savages and in civilized nations. Pleasant copy, in spite of a blunt corner.
