MONTESSON (Charlotte-Jeanne Béraud, marquise de)].
The Countess de Chazelle. Comedy in five acts and verses. S.l.n.d. [Paris, Didot l'aîné, 1785]. In-12, marbled calf, decorated smooth spine (contemporary binding). Brunet, t. IV, col. 165. - Quérard, vol. VI, pp. 247-248. Very rare first edition, printed in a few copies for the author's friends. Inspired by Laclos' Dangerous Liaisons and Richardson's Clarisse, this comedy was not well received and was considered immoral. Widow of a lieutenant-general in the king's armies, renowned for her wit and brilliant relationships, the Marquise de Montesson (1737-1806) had a passionate affair with the Duke of Orléans, grandson of the Regent, whom she married in secret in 1772-1773. By the end of the century, her theatre in the rue d'Antin had become a major event in Parisian society.
