MANUSCRIBE. - [BILLARD?]. Reading notes. S.l.n.d. [late 18th century]. Manuscript in-4, 440 pages, plus some interleaved leaves and 3 printed documents, paperback, cover of green marbled paper, untrimmed. INTERESTING COLLECTION OF READING NOTES, BY AN ELEVANT SPIRIT OF THE XVIIIth CENTURY. The many articles in the book relate to a wide variety of fields: despots, monarchy, loans, ministers, conquests, abuses, rebellion, prevention, military music, Venice, Genoa, Switzerland, Holland, political economy, civil war, equality, tolerance, superstition, gold and silver wealth, taxes, opinion, people in revolutions, tyranny, great men, people of letters, etc. The author quotes Jean-Jacques Rousseau (Le Contrat social et La Nouvelle-Héloïse), and Voltaire, but also Bayle, Cicero, Demosthenes, Fénelon, Machiavelli, Milton, Montesquieu, Necker, Savonarole, Tacite, etc. It contains a statement of the Navy in 1778, giving a list of ships of the line and frigates, accompanied by a printout entitled Lettre du Roi à Son Altesse Sérénissime Monseigneur l'Amiral, dated April 5, 1779, about the beginning of hostilities with England. The other two prints, dated 1763 and 1783 respectively, concern the end of the Seven Years' War and the end of the American War of Independence. A chapter on the Order of Malta, including a table of the division of languages, dignities, priories and bailiwicks, and an article on Catalan nobility, also appear in the collection. This manuscript is anonymous, but a pencil note on the first page states: The author of this collection, M. Billard, appears to have been born around 1739 or 1749. Bameron. According to the dates mentioned, it would have been compiled during the 1770s and completed around 1796. Back very worn with missing parts, one dish detached.
