Yellow Book (the) containing some conversations... - Lot 253 - Giquello
Yellow Book (the) containing some conversations about Logomachies, i.e. about disputes over words, abuse of terms, contradictions, double understanding, false meanings, which are used in Discourses, & in Writings. Basel, 1748. In-8, yellow paperboard (Posterior binding). A book printed in very small numbers on yellow paper, a colour which the author praises for reading in his Avertissement. Peignot, Bibliographie curieuse, indicates: a rare work, printed in 30 copies on vegetable paper. The Yellow Book is presented as a verbal joust between two characters who deal with various subjects: polygamy, suicide, the notion of freedom, despotism, the explanation of the Apocalypse by algebra and geometry, etc. The book is also a book of the same name. Its attribution remains to be determined; if the name of Claude Gros de Boze (1680-1753), scholar and academician, was often mentioned, it would seem that Gilles-Augustin Bazin (1681-1754), who was once the librarian of the Cardinal of Rohan, is the author (see the catalogue of the Gros de Boze sale, 1753, no. 364). Ex libris by Georges Hugnet.
