L'ÉPÉE (Charles-Michel, abbé de).
Institution of the deaf and dumb, through the voice of methodical signs. Paris, Nyon l'aîné, 1776. In-12, marbled calf, decorated spine, red coin, red edges (contemporary binding). Garrison-Morton, n°3354. Original edition. The abbot of L'Épée was the founder of the first free and public school open to all deaf-mutes: With the help of drawing and the manual alphabet he managed not only to fix in the mind of the deaf-mute the grammatical nomenclature and to express the simple relationships of objects, but to create a true language, "expressive and fertile" (cf. In French in the text, n°168). A copy offered by the author as seems to be attested by this handwritten mention on the false title: Du don de l'auteur l'Abbé de l'Épée. Work of verse in the margin. Back a little past.
