LE GALLOIS.
Conversations from the Academy of Father Bourdelot containing various research and physical observations. Paris, Thomas Moette, 1672. In-12, granite calf, spine decorated, edges speckled with red (contemporary binding). Original edition. First report of the sessions of the Bourdelot academy, a private scientific circle founded at the instigation of the Prince de Condé in the early 1640s by the physician Pierre Michon, known as Abbé Bourdelot (1610-1684). This academy included many renowned scientists among its lecturers: among the athletes who practised in these battles of the mind (p. 58) were, for example, Blaise Pascal, the mathematician Gilles de Roberval, Pierre Gassendi and the Danish anatomist Nicolas Stenon. The book was published by the secretary of the said academy and contains six conversations. The subjects treated are varied: extraordinary stories about dentition, articles on the plague, sulphur, venoms, hurricanes and storms that arrive in the West Indies, the philosopher's stone, drinking gold, gold from the mines of Potosi (Peru), apparitions of spirits, etc. Finally, let us mention an interesting article on blood transfusion (pp. 83-90), echoing the debate on blood transfusion in man, first carried out by Jean-Baptiste Denis a few years before (1667). An edition appeared the same year under a different title, with a second part added (this one, paginated 279-350, is not mentioned in the table). On the upper back cover, a label glued by Godefroy, a bookbinder in Blois, who bought and sold old books and parchment.
