LANCELOT (Claude).
The Garden of Greek Roots, set in French verse. With a Treatise of Prepositions & other Indeclinable Particles, and an Alphabetical Collection of the words François drew from the Greek Language. Paris, Pierre le Petit, 1657. In-12, wove overlapping vellum, manuscript title in red and black on the spine, edges speckled with red (19th century binding). Original edition, decorated with an allegorical frontispiece engraved in intaglio. Collection of etymologies published for instruction in the small schools of Port-Royal, giving a method for learning the Greek language, which is undoubtedly the most beautiful & richest of all languages, but whose entry has always seemed until that time difficult & unpleasant to young people. The Work is very remarkable for its time, both for its erudition and for the didactic clarity and simplicity that it manifests [...]. It is a precious testimony to the teaching methods of Port-Royal, which were well ahead of their time (Laffont-Bompiani, vol. II, pp. 74-75). Handwritten ex-libris on the title.
