GRIGUETTE (Bénigne).
The Triumphant Weapons of His Highness, Monsignor, the Duke of Espernon. For the subject of His Happy Entry made in the city of Dijon, May 8, 1656. Dijon, Philibert Chavance, 1656. In-folio, lemon half-maroquin with small vellum corners, spine decorated with gold edges (modern binding in the old taste). Milsand, Bibliographie bourguignonne, p. 417. Original edition of this very rare and beautiful festival book containing the account of the entry into Dijon of Bernard de Nogaret, duke of Epernon (1592-1661), governor of Burgundy from 1654 to 1660. This entry, which was attended by all the nobility of the province, was preceded by a procession of eight hundred gentlemen accompanying the duke. The illustration, engraved on copper by Antoine Mathieu after the painter Jean Godran, both from Dijon, consists of an allegorical frontispiece with an equestrian portrait of the duke, 2 vignettes in the text and 16 large engravings : 8 plates, some unfolding, depicting on the one hand the triumphal arches, columns and emblems erected for this event, and on the other hand the great fireworks display on the Place de la Sainte-Chapelle; and 8 allegorical engravings in the text illustrating the heroic virtues His Highness used to reduce the Rebels to their duty. Restoration to the last 2 folios (beginning of consolidated slit and a partly redone margin).
